Class One's Chick Blog - Part Three

Last week Class One said a sad farewell to the last of our chicks for this year when Lucky, Furry and Sleepy, our ducklings went to their new home.
The children have learnt so much from the hatching experience and we will miss having our little friends around to take care of. What we might not miss so much is all the cleaning up and the smell!
We really enjoyed helping them learn to swim. Although we didn't actually have to do much teaching because they were naturals - like ducks to water as they say!

As well as developing the children's knowledge and understanding, taking care of the ducks, sharing responsibilities and working as a team has developed their social skills. In addition to all these benefits the experience has also provided some excellent motivation for writing and creative work.
We know that, like the chicks, our ducklings have gone to a really good home and that we will be finding out more about them as they continue to grow and develop.

Veni Vidi Vici

Class 3 travelled further than usual for their educational visit this week - two thousand years further! The class headed back to Roman Britain and became the newest recruits in the Roman army.

The rookie soldiers were put through their paces by our centurion who had them marching in unison in next to no time! The children learnt how important team work and discipline was to the Romans. The day was packed full of activities: oil lamp making; weapon and fighting practise; guard duty and Latin lessons.

After lunch we had a chance to recreate the famous 'testudo' or tortoise formation used by the Romans in battle. The training proved to be very useful as we came under attack from the hostile Celtic natives who launched a raid.
The Celts were no match for the Class 3 legion and they soon made a hasty retreat.

We had a fabulous day packed full of learning. Everyone agreed that it had help to bring our topic to life! Hail Caesar!!

"The best day ever at Brimham Rocks" by Class One

The children in Class One remembered all about our visit to Brimham Rocks when we looked at Mr Madeley's blog post and at the photographs we had taken. They had lots to say about the fantastic time they had on their adventure and wanted to post more photographs on the blog.
This was at the beginning of our adventure.
Edward R -"I went on the walk."
Jasmine - "Mr Madeley always had to be in front."
Isabelle - "I was pushing up the rock."
Oliver - "I loved sneaking up and I liked playing."
Rosie - "We were playing a game and we had to hide close to Mr Madeley."
Andrew - "We were sneaking up."
Ewan - "I liked when we crept up on Mr Madeley."
Harriet - "I sneaked up to Mr Madeley."
Eleanor - "We started our walk."
Rey - "I was hiding so Mr Madeley couldn't see me."
Abigail - "I sneaked up. I had to be very still."
Erika - "The rock was freaky and it looked like a duck."

Class 1 at Brimham Rocks

We had a fabulous time at Brimham Rocks. We learnt about how the rocks came to be there, about animals and their camoflage and about how to do exciting things safely. We played lots of games, including trying to sneak up on our prey (Mr Madeley) without being noticed and how to hide from a predator. Best of all we had plenty of time to climb on, over and through the rocks. It was a super day and even the weather was good to us.

Class One's Chick Blog - Part One

Just over three weeks ago Class One put their hen and duck eggs in the incubator. After lots of careful counting down, preparation and eager anticipation we were thrilled at the arrival of two beautiful little chicks last Thursday. During the incubation period we checked the temperature and humidity of the incubator daily as well as giving careful consideration as to how we would care for the chicks when they arrived.

We wanted to make a blog to let everyone know what is happening with our chicks, how we care for them and how we feel about them. Some of the children have taken or chosen photographs for this blog and written their own captions. We intend to do another bog next week to report on progress including, hopefully, news about our ducklings as well.
