Maple Crayford Vist ~ Class 2

This afternoon we were treated to a visit from Maple Crayford  who is a greyhound dog.

Mrs Crayford and Jacob told us that Maple was born in 2004 and that she was a racing hound until 2007 when she was dumped and then rescued by the Crayford family from Tia Greyhound Rescue.

At home Maple eats healthy dog biscuits three times a day and drinks water. She also goes for walks three times a day and sleeps in a basket with an old blanket. Maple's fur is not waterproof like most dogs so if it is raining she needs to wear a coat to keep her dry.

Mrs Crayford told us that Maple cannot be let off the lead when they are out walking as she chases anything small and furry especially rabbits and she runs very fast too.

We all enjoyed meeting Maple as we have heard a lot about her during out pets topic.
Thank you to Mrs Crayford, Emily and Jacob for letting us all meet her.

Atoms and Molecules ~ Class 2 Science Week

During science week the children in Class 2 have been finding out about atoms and molecules.

We found out that everything around us is made of atoms and that atoms are so small they are indivisible, which means they cannot be divided any more.

When two atoms join together they form a molecule. Molecules have strong bonds holding them together.

We used fuzzy balls to represent water, oxygen, salt and sugar molecules.

We found out about solids, liquids and gases. In a solid the atoms are packed closely together in a  structure with strong bonds holding them together.

We sorted lots of different materials according to whether they are solids, liquids or gases.

The children asked lots of interesting questions such as how small is an atom and  is sand a liquid or a solid because it can be poured?

We found out that water can be a solid, liquid or gas depending on what temperature it is. It can change from one state to another.

Well done Class 2, you have a great interest in chemistry and you are super scientists!

Rewind to Easter ~ Year 5

On Wednesday afternoon the children in Year 5 attended Moortown Baptist Church for this year's Rewind to Easter. This is an hour and a half event during which the children explore the Easter Story and learn why Easter is an important festival for those of the Christian faith.

The event includes:

A dramatic retelling of the Easter story,

A craft activity based around the Easter theme

and opportunities to wonder about the Easter story with different characters.
The event is always really well organised and it is a great way for us to learn about this important festival in a practical and interactive way. Thank you to Mrs Jarvis for accompanying us on the visit.
