Pattern and Style at Harewood ~ Class 2

As part of our creative arts week Class 2 had a lovely morning out on Thursday and were treated to a tour of Harewood House.

We were  looking at different patterns and styles that can be found throughout the house from ceilings and fabrics to carpets and paintings.

We discovered the shapes, symmetry and patterns that make up the decorative styles within the house. We saw that this rug matches the ceiling pattern on the picture above.

In the Entrance Hall everyone was given a shape or pattern that they had to look for. We had to look very carefully because some of the shapes were above or heads and some were below!

Some patterns were geometric, some were floral...

and others were of animals.

This pattern is called the Greek Key and could be found in many of the rooms if you were looking very carefully.

We found out that this Chinese wallpaper has no repeating patterns at all! Every piece has a different scene painted on it.

This piece of furniture was designed by Thomas Chippendale who was born in Otley and was a famous craft maker and designer. We noticed the symmetrical style and pattern of the design.

We spent a lot of time looking up which was starting to make our necks hurt..

until we discovered an easier way to look at the ceilings!

We had a brisk walk back to school and we were ready for our lunch. Luckily there was some help at hand for tired legs!

Mr B in Class 3

What a fantastic morning we have had in Class 3! As part of our feature week we have been studying the work of Keith Haring the renowned street artist. Mr Bannerman-Bales generously gave up his time to come and work with us.

We started by learning about Keith Haring and his work. The class loved his bright colours and simple shapes. Using the images as inspiration, we created our own pictures to illustrate the attitudes that are important to be a successful learner. These will be used as the basis of our mural design project. We can't wait to transfer our ideas to the wall! Thank-you very much Mr.B!

Symmetrical Patterns~Class 2

In math this week the children in Year 1 have been investigating symmetry. They have been looking at symmetrical patterns in the world around them and on Friday they created their own symmetrical patterns in the outdoor area.

First they chose the materials they wanted to use.

Then they created their patterns making sure they were symmetrical.

Some children used Mrs Reynolds scarf as a line of symmetry!

The children had lots of fun learning and were very proud of their work!
