This half term the children in Class 3 have been finding out in their R.E. lessons what it means to be a Jew. We have found out the significance of Moses as a key figure in Judaism and explored the stories of God's faithfulness to his people as revealed in the Exodus story.
Last week we were lucky enough to have Mrs Harvey as our guest speaker and she explained how her family celebrate the festival of Pesach. Pesach or Passover focuses on celebrating God's deliverance of the Hebrew people from slavery. During the meal the words of the Haggadah are read and the children chant the famous Four Questions, the Mah Nishtanah.
We drank grape juice as a sign of joy, laughter and celebration. Drinking a cup of wine while reclining to the right is a sign of freedom.
One of the highlights of the celebrations for Jewish families today is the Seder plate. Each item on the plate has symbolic meaning that links to the story of the Exodus. We all had the chance to try some of the food on the Seder plate.
As part of the Passover meal the Ten Plagues, which the Egyptians were stricken with, are said and remembered.
Matzah is also shared to remember the haste at which the Hebrews has to leave Egypt.
We had a very enjoyable and informative afternoon. We learnt so much about how many Jewish people celebrate Pesach today. Thank you Mrs Harvey from everyone in Class 3.
