Rosie's big day out

In the cockpit
Rosie says, "It was bring your child to work day, so my Daddy took me to Leeds Bradford Airport. He is a Captain, flying aeroplanes for British Airways. I had to wait for my Daddy to land his plane as he was flying in from Heathrow Airport in London."

Outside the plane
" I went into the plane. We looked at the passenger cabin and the cockpit. Daddy showed me all the buttons and levers that fly the plane. We had lots of photographs taken. Then he had to fly away somewhere else, so I got to go up into the Control Tower to watch him take off."

Bye bye, Daddy
"As he flew away, I heard him say 'Goodbye, Rosie' over the radio. I had a brilliant time."

Eggsfile Update from Class One

Look at how much our chicks have grown in just a week.
We made careful observations of them and had a final cuddle before they went to their lovely new homes on Wednesday. We were very careful.
Some of the children did more writing fabout the chicks for the blog.
Oliver -They have got wings.
Connie - The chicks are going to their new homes.
Zara was particularly excited when she wrote: The 2 brown chicks will live with me in 6 weeks.
We were very happy to welcome two beautiful ducklings on Wednesday.
When they were dry we put them in the cage under the electric hen (or electric duck!).
They are great friends and always snuggle together.
We have been able to compare the things that are the same about the chicks and ducklings and the things that are different.
Connie - The ducks have softer beaks than the chicks. They're not as pointy.
Gabriel - After they have splashed in the water the ducklings shake their feathers.
They love to play in the water.
Hugo wrote the list of names his friends had chosen so we could vote on the most popular ones. Fluffy and Pecky were the two names we chose for our ducklings.

Back to Nature Class 2

Class 2 visited Thwaite Mills Island as part of their topic on Minibeasts. We started off by using nets to catch any insects we saw and looked at them closely using magnifying glasses.

We found lots of mini beasts including ladybirds, spiders, millipedes and snails.

This is an insect hotel! Anyone fancy checking in?

We put on some gardening gloves and searched through the compost for more mini beasts.

What have you found now Connel?

We were having a great time and the sun was shining!

George showed us how bees make honey in a hive. It was very interesting and we all listened really carefully.

We all enjoyed using the nets for pond dipping. There were lots of water creatures for us to see. We used information cards to identify them.

We had a lovely picnic lunch in the garden, we were all hungry after our morning activities.

We had a good run around outside with skipping ropes and balls and then played circle games with Miss Clayton.

In the afternoon we had a craft activity making a butterfly or a dragonfly. We concentrated and followed the instructions we were given.

They look great! We had a brilliant day exploring nature and found out even more about mini beasts.

The Return of the Class One 'Eggsfiles'

It's the summer term and, following the tradition of Class One's before them, the children have confidently taken on the responsibility for hatching their own chickens (and hopefully ducklings too).
At the beginning of this term they began learning about the incubation process and thought carefully about how we could ensure a successful hatch from the incubator. There was a lot to consider and they have all helped by carefully counting down the days, checking temperatures and adjusting humidity levels. All these jobs created some interesting mathematical problems, which they had to solve (with a little support).
After three weeks of patiently waiting we have now been rewarded with a successful  first hatch of chicks.
Most of the children were able to witness at least one of the chicks hatching and, as you can imagine, the whole experience has created quite a buzz in the classroom.
After more discussion we decided on the best place to keep the new arrivals and how to look after them to keep them and ourselves safe. The children have had the opportunity to observe closely and record what the chicks look like and how they behave through lots of different media. They have painted them, drawn them with pencil and pastels as well as modelling their own chicks from play dough. Everyone has had the opportunity to handle the chicks and feed them. There has also been lots of fantastic photography.
The children wanted to write their own messages for the blog to let everyone know a little more about the chicks and how we have been caring for them.
Hugo - Welcome to our chick blog. We feed the chicks and we give them water.
Esme - Some of the chicks have hatched.
Guran - I love the chicks.
Grace - The chicks are cute.
Jake - I took pictures with the camera.
Zane - The chicks are the best.
Mia - When I take pictures of them they jump.
Charlie - First they were small.
Carrick - The chicks cheep. We have ten chicks.

We will add more information next week, when we will hopefully have more news about our duck eggs.
