Herd Farm ~ Class 3

On Monday this week the children in Class 3 went to Herd Farm for a Stone Age to Iron Age experience. 

 We started off finding out about the way people in the Stone Age used the environment around them to survive. 

 We looked at simple Stone Age shelters that were made from natural materials that they found around them. 

  We built our own shelters..

 but as we didn't have any animal skins we used tarpaulin..

 and pegs to hold it all together. 

 We looked at how tools developed from the Stone Age to Iron Age and the impact that had on their quality of life. 

 Time for our Stone Age lunch, and as the weather was particularly inclement we decided to have lunch indoors. 

 We then looked at the construction of round houses which were built during the Iron Age. 

 We went inside one and Ian tried to make a fire which proved very hard work particularly on such a cold and damp day. 

 We went outside and sat around the fire pit.

 Everyone was given a tunic and belt to wear and we had our faces painted. 

 Now we were Iron Age warriors and we practised our spear throwing. 

Now it was time for the hunt. 

 Six brave warriors left the village and made after a deer. 

 The rest of the village looked on in anticipation...

the warriors were jubilant as they returned with their valuable kill. 

 We had a fantastic day, and it was a great way to round off out topic about the Stone Age.

Peacemakers ~ Class 3

The children in Class 3 have been taking part in a number of activities around a theme of peace. 

We took part in an art project with the Leeds City Museum. We were asked to create symbols of peace to be displayed in the museum alongside work from other schools and community groups in Leeds. 

Two visitors came from the museum to explain what the project was all about. 

They told us about the First World War.

 and we looked at lots of artefacts from the museum. 

Then we started our art work. 

The work is on display at the Leeds City Museum until Sunday 18th November 2018. 

As part of our Armistice celebrations we have created poppy field pictures in our sketch books. The poppies have been a symbol of hope, courage and peace for the last hundred years and we were keen to make them part of our work on peace. 

We all helped to create a new peace garden in our school grounds

 Everyone planted a flower or shrub in the boarders of the garden. 

We had lots of fun along the way and we now have a quite space for reflection and peacefulness in our school.
