Year 6 Crucial Crew

On Wednesday Year 6 went to Crucial Crew at Deverell Barracks in Ripon. Crucial Crew is run by the emergency sevices. It gives young children a taste of the dangers of the modern day such as dangers on farms, roads and how to handle drugs. They had recreated scenarios that had happened in the past. There were 10 different scenarios all about different things. They had films about electrical safety which made us jump! One of the scenarios was about safety on river banks. We had to imagine that Alaric had fallen in a river. There was a range of objects on the bank including a water bottle, some rope and a tyre. We had to decide which objects would help the most. When he was out of the water we learnt about the recovery position.
The next scenario was about farm safety. We found that there are many dangers on farms. Like falling into a slurry pit and drowning or getting caught in some machinery. The scenario about drugs was set in a disco. A lady was giving out sweets that were in actual fact meant to be drugs. We were told never to take anything from strangers because they could be drug dealers. We learnt what to do if we saw a hypodermic syringe in the street. There were 5 other scenarios that we saw. Everybody enjoyed Crucial Crew and we learnt a lot.

Class 4: Anti-bullying role-play

On the 8th of February Class 4 were learning about bullying in class. We acted out a scene chosen by Mrs Brotherton. Everybody's group had a different scene, some of them were walking home from school and some going on the bus. After all of the groups finished their piece that they had put together, everyone acted it out and Mrs Brotherton recorded it on our new video cameras. We then played back the film and watched ourselves acting. We discussed what we had seen.

Class 4 ice skating

On Wednesday, 10th January, Class 4 went ice skating at the Millenium Square in Leeds. We all had a brilliant time. We owe a lot of thanks to our instructors who taught us how to stop, jump, skate on one leg and spin. Even the teachers had a go including Mrs Burnley, Miss McHale, Mrs Lockwood and Mrs Hughes, who had a spectacular fall but was okay.
Many of us fell over but all got back up and tried again. When we finished, we all thought it had finished all too soon.
It was brilliant and a great experience to learn to ice skate. We all thank the teachers who organised it for us and hope we go again.

Exploring pastels

We have been getting our hands dirty in Class 3 and the oil pastels are to blame. We have been exploring the different textures and colours we can create when we mix pastels together.

Our art work is connected to our Literacy unit on mythical beasts - if you look closely you can see some terrifying eyeballs, talons and tails!

Using different strokes with the pastels we have created dragon scales, bird feathers and snake skin.

Gym stars!

Class 3 have been lucky enough to have not one, but two gym coaches! Not only has Lisa been coming into school to teach us every week, but our very own Mr. Cullingworth has been lending a hand too! We have learnt how to perfect our rolls, leaps and travelling activities. Lisa has taught us how to use the apparatus safely and how to work with partners to improve our gym technique.

We have enjoyed exploring the apparatus and finding new ways of travelling around the gym.

Mr. Cullingworth showed us the best way to hold our balances.

That grin says it all!

Leaping is one of our favourite activities, we are getting better at holding strong shapes in the air. Next week is our last lesson with Lisa, we have thoroughly enjoyed the lessons and hope she can come back soon!
