Year 6 Crucial Crew

On Wednesday Year 6 went to Crucial Crew at Deverell Barracks in Ripon. Crucial Crew is run by the emergency sevices. It gives young children a taste of the dangers of the modern day such as dangers on farms, roads and how to handle drugs. They had recreated scenarios that had happened in the past. There were 10 different scenarios all about different things. They had films about electrical safety which made us jump! One of the scenarios was about safety on river banks. We had to imagine that Alaric had fallen in a river. There was a range of objects on the bank including a water bottle, some rope and a tyre. We had to decide which objects would help the most. When he was out of the water we learnt about the recovery position.
The next scenario was about farm safety. We found that there are many dangers on farms. Like falling into a slurry pit and drowning or getting caught in some machinery. The scenario about drugs was set in a disco. A lady was giving out sweets that were in actual fact meant to be drugs. We were told never to take anything from strangers because they could be drug dealers. We learnt what to do if we saw a hypodermic syringe in the street. There were 5 other scenarios that we saw. Everybody enjoyed Crucial Crew and we learnt a lot.

This is a great opportunity for the children to learn about the dangers that they may face, put in a way which they will understand.A very worth while visit, may it continue for all future year 6 pupils
