Harewood Village Walk

Class One wrote letters to our cuddly teddies and toys at home this week. We invited them to join us in school for our Easter egg hunt and yesterday morning we visited the post office to post our letters. We also went for a short walk around Harewood village to look at the spring flowers, which are popping up all everywhere. Later in the day we painted our own spring flowers for our Easter cards, after looking closely at the photographs we took on our walk for inspiration. The whole class behaved brilliantly on our walk and what fantastic art work they produced! If you would like to see our pictures in more detail please have a look at the gallery pages.

Filming Our Blog

Today a man called Chris Boylan, from Education Leeds, came in to school to make a short film about our Blog. He did this to get other schools involved in blogging. He came to Harewood because we are enthusiastic about blogging and have been recognised as having done very well in developing our school blog from scratch. We felt very proud about this and about representing the school on the film. He filmed us while he was asking us questions about the blog and what we all liked about it. At the same time we were working on this post about him filming us! He also filmed Mr Madeley, some other teachers and some parents. We hope that other schools can get involved blogging as it is a fun I.C.T activity.

Introducing Mr Sturgess - New Class 4 Teacher from Sept 2010

Earlier this week I was delighted to receive the news I have been appointed as the new teacher for Class 4 from next September! It seems appropriate that I should tell you a little bit about myself.
My name is Matthew Sturgess and I have been working in the teaching profession for 5 years with the majority of my experience at Key Stage 2. I am ICT leader and Year 4 class teacher at Forest Preparatory School in North East London where I have taught for the last 4 years. This post has been a tremendous success professionally, although I have always had in mind that one day I would return to my home county of Yorkshire if the right job came along - which it did!

Harewood C of E primary school has an outstanding reputation and I feel very fortunate to have been given the chance to be part of its future. During the interview process I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to teach a lesson to Class 4 and have a tour of the school. The warm welcome I received from the staff and the polite, enthusiastic pupils simply reaffirmed that this is a school where I would love to work; there is a wonderful atmosphere of learning throughout the school and a genuine sense of community.
I am a highly motivated and dedicated teacher who takes pride in delivering excellent pastoral provision for all the pupils in my care. I firmly believe that by ensuring all pupils in my class feel secure and happy at school they will be motivated learners. My aim is to deliver engaging lessons that raise the standards of all pupils I teach whilst equipping them with the skills to recognise what they need to do to improve. I am keen to work with parents to achieve this aim and anticipate your support. I look forward to returning to Harewood before the end of the summer term to meet with Mrs Burnley to ensure a smooth transition for the pupils and to continue the excellent work she has done with Class 4.

I would like to thank Mr Madeley and the interviewing panel for giving me this wonderful opportunity. I look forward to seeing you all in September.

Year 5 Rewind to Easter

Today we went to the Easter Rewind at Moortown Baptist Church. We had a fantastic time! First of all we got into groups (Chocolate and Bunnies). Bunnies and a few other groups from different schools decorated a pot and planted a bulb in the soil. The rest of the children did an interesting worksheet and had refreshments. Then we swopped around. After that, we all got together and watched film clips of the Easter story.
We had to catch a bus. It was a very long walk to the church; children at the back had to run to keep up with Mrs Lockwood!

Miles of smiles!

(UPDATE: 26/03/10 Total raised for Sports Relief - £1006.40!!!!!! Mr M.)

Sports Relief had us all jumping for joy yesterday as the whole school set off on their fund raising adventure. We did not run around our school field, oh no - not us! We were so lucky we got to do our mile by completing eight laps of the adventure playground at Harewood. We had a brilliant day running our mile for Sport Relief!

Some parents came to help us walk to Harewood House, we were very grateful. We had so much fun sliding down the slides, climbing through tunnels and scrambling through the netting that we didn't notice the miles!
After we had completed four laps we started to get very tired, but we had to keep on going. Finally we staggered around our final lap and crossed the finish line. Lots of us collapsed with exhaustion.

Although Class 1 didn't take part in the lap challenge they did help to raise money by keeping active on the smaller playground.

Everyone had a great time for a good cause. We are now collecting in our sponsorship money - we hope we can raise a lot of money to send to Sport Relief. The money collected will help projects in both the UK and abroad. Have you collected your sponsorship money yet?

Keep going, nearly there!
Class 2 try to take a break, but they've been spotted!

Halfway round, four more laps to go.

The boys go for a sprint finish.
Everyone agreed it had been a great day, well done everyone!

Bee-bot-a-loo-la!!

Beebots have got Class 3 buzzing! This week we used the beebots in our ICT lesson to investigate simple programming.

The Beebots are a great way to learn about right angles and directions. We have been investigating clockwise and anti-clockwise movements.

We quickly learnt how to program the Beebots with a list of simple commands so that we could draw square and rectangles.

Next week we will be using the Pro-bots which can turn be programmed with more complex commands. Let's hope that we can all cope with the excitement!
