Diversity Week ~ Class 2

This week we had a Diversity feature week. We started the week with a visit from Scary Guy.

He came all the way from America to work with us and he helped us think about making our own choices and developing positive behaviour habits.

His lesson was a lot of fun and the children were really engaged.

We then had a visit from Mrs Fitter who told us about Zoroastrianism.

Mrs Fitter told us lots of interesting information about her religion.

We found out that an important message of the religion is good thoughts, good words and good deeds.

We thought that these words are important for all us to try to remember in our lives.

Mrs Fitter brought some cakes in to share with us. These would be eaten at part of a festival such as Nauroz, which is the New Year celebrated on 21st March.

Mr Chandon came to speak to the children about the Hindu festival of Diwali.

He told us about Ganesh, one of the popular Hindu gods, and we all coloured some pictures in.

We all tried a poppadum with mango chutney.

Louis was really proud of his daddy's lesson.

Mrs Hassian came to talk to us about henna and how it is used to create beautiful patterns on the skin for special occasions such a wedding in the Hindu religion.

We designed our own henna patterns on paper.

We read the story of Elmer who is a patchwork elephant.
We used the message in this story to think about what is unique about ourselves as individuals and to help us understand that everyone is special in unique ways.

We all helped to bake some elephant shaped biscuits.

We iced them with different colours and patterns.

We wanted to appreciate that difference is a positive thing and that difference is part of living in a diverse world.

The Scary Guy visits Harewood!

We were so lucky to have 'The Scary Guy' join us today for a series of workshops about 'building a powerful mind'.

With his help, we are working on developing the skills to deal with negative words and actions.

It has been a brilliant day- we have all learnt that we are 'in control of our brains' and cannot be affected by negative words and actions! All we have to do.... is realise that their negativity is about how they are feeling. Its is not about us- it cannot affect us! (easier said than done- but a great place to start!)

Class 1 and 2 all learnt about the 7 pledges for kids:

We loved:
- Always be myself (as this is going to be one of our new Golden Promises)
-Always help others
-Always resolve conflict without fighting
-Never reject someone because of how they look

These are perfect for keeping our Harewood team safe, happy and positive.

We are all taking the 7 days and 7 nights challenge- in this time you can only say positive things to other people. It will be a challenge but we are up for it.... are you?

Class 4 looked at the questions 'Who is in charge of your brain?'

Seems like a simple question- but it seems that some of us had inadvertently given control of our brains to another without realising it!

After a quick bit of group thinking we realised that when someone is saying something hurtful to you- the negativity is theirs (usually stemming from something negative they are feeling themselves) by realising this as it is happening we are able to take back control of our feelings and not be affected by their words!
We are in charge of our brains!!!!!

This was a great session- the children have been talking about it all day today and I am sure it will really help us!

Class 3 looked at what to do with negative energy from others

Don't ignore it.... see it for what it is- their negative feeling about themselves. Choose to keep hold of your positive feeling and get on with enjoying your day.

So.... we are all starting our journey. Seeing the negative and dealing with it and making sure we only project positivity towards others.... join us! (if you think you are up for the challenge!)

Class 4 have it all mapped out!

What an amazing day we have had with 'Team Walking'. Outdoor learning is a very important part of our curriculum here at Harewood, so we leapt at the chance to have a day dedicated to developing our map reading and orientation skills.

Mark, Graeme and Tamsin started the day with a map workshop in the classroom. We learnt a little about the history of maps, before mapping out our journey to school and sketching contours.

Moving onto the school field, we learnt how to set our maps to north and how to create our own maps to scale. Equipped with our new skills, we set out on our hike around the Harewood estate.

As we walked we learnt more about our surroundings and how they are mapped. We also learnt the importance of co-operation during our blindfolded sensory walk!

For lunch, we created a sheltered spot - can you see us??

The day covered so many topics - maths, geography, science and history! All the children agreed that the outdoor classroom was a great way to learn. Many thanks to the PTA who part funded the day!
