Last week the whole school had the opportunity to walk down to All Saints Church in Harewood for an activity session organised by the charity Churches Conservation Trust. They work in churches all over the country that are no longer in regular use and they encourage visitors so that the churches can remain open and be conserved for future generations. All the activities were organised by Elizabeth Bell who is the Heritage Learning Officer for our area.
Class 1 went first and they explored the features in the church and discussed similarities and differences between places, objects and materials.
They had the opportunity to become familiar with the church and they created patterns and used mathematical language to describe the things they could see.
Next it was Class 2's turn to explore the church.
There were opportunities for role play..
and building.
and developing mapping skills.
They looked closely at some of the features of the church.
In the afternoon Class 3 visited the church followed by Class 4.
We explored the church looking close up at some of the features using magnifying glasses, hand held microscopes and torches.
The children in class 4 got their bearings by working out which direction in the church was North. They found out that the stained glass window was facing East, so it lights up beautifully in the morning when the sun rises.
They used geographical and historical language to describe the church...
..and to find out more about its features.
We had a very informative day and we all found out more about our local church. Many thanks to the parent volunteers that accompanied us and thank you to the Churches Conservation Trust for organising the day. We are very fortunate to have made a link with you and I hope we can work together again in the future.
