Everyone's a winner!

Here it is - the moment our mathletics club has been waiting for, a photo of our Golden boy! Yes finally we have our first gold certificate. It has taken hours of work and thousands of points - but we finally have one! The Mathletics club aren't going to stop there, soon we hope to have other gold members. Could it be you?

The club meet every Wednesday lunchtime, but many of us also complete lots of activities at home to earn our extra points.

The Mathletes weren't the only winners this week. We also completed our Science challenge and found the winner of the Chelsea thermos mug.

Everyone in Class 3 designed an insulated cup to keep Miss King's tea hot at playtime. The winning mug kept the tea at a toasty 37 degrees after half an hour of cooling time, pretty impressive!

Class One's Map Reading Adventure

Lots of children in Class One have been interested in maps recently and have been drawing different kinds of maps at home and in the classroom. On Friday we had the chance to visit the grounds of Harewood House, so we had a map reading adventure. We looked at the map of the park before we set off and again during our journey. Everyone was brilliantly behaved and the weather was lovely. After reaching the walled garden we had our fruit and a drink before setting off back to school for lunch.

The children wrote their own words to go with our photographs.

Maths Detectives

Class 3 have turned into maths detectives this week. We were investigating pentaminoes. Pentaminoes are shapes made by joining five squares together. We found out that there were twelve differerent possible ways to make a pentamino - pretty impressive!
We have also been exploring nets of 3d shapes. A net is the pattern you get when you collapse a 3D shape into a 2D shape.

This net was made for homework, it folds up to make a cuboid.

This impressive effort folds up to make a triangular prism. Below you can see a picture of the net when the shape is laid flat.

Lots of the children created very intricate designs for their nets, well done everyone!

Crucial Crew

On Thursday 3rd March Year 6 went to Ripon to take part in Crucial Crew. At Crucial Crew they took part in a variety of different workshops covering all aspects of safety. 

They learnt about water safety and rescuing someone from the water. They also learnt about the recovery position.

There were workshops on road safety and how to deal with an accident, as well as farm safety, safety around electricity and how to keep safe using the internet.

The Fire Service talked about what to do in a fire and the police explained how they deal with shop lifters and those who take part in anti-social behaviour. They also told the children about the dangers of drugs.

One of the best bits was the opportunity to make 999 calls, as if for real, to a special call centre set up for the event.

Not only did the Year 6 children impress with their excellent behaviour, but their mature and sensible attitude to the different workshops meant that they got a great deal from all aspects of the trip.

How well do you know your number buns?

Class 3 had a great time on Tuesday when they took part in World Maths Day. Mathletes from all over the world had one day to complete the special acitivities hosted on the Mathletics website. We competed against children from New Zealand to Nigeria. Our Class 3 Mathletes put in a fantastic peformance and won many of their games.

As well as taking part in the online games we also had lots of other maths activities to challenge us. We had used our measuring skills to bake buns at home, we then decorated these in a maths theme to create our number buns.

A big thank you to the parents who had helped the children create their number themed outfits - we all looked fantastic.

Some of the most popular challenges involved the 3D and 2D shapes. The children worked in small teams to create the shapes using our construction materials.

Another Class 3 winner!

Although World Maths Day is over for another year - we still have our membership to Mathletics. All children in KS2 can access the site at school and at home, it's a great way to polish up those maths skills!

Class One's Marvellous Microscope

There has been so much going on in Class One this half-term that we decided to let each colour group choose something they have enjoyed and do a blog about it. All the groups will have a turn over the next few weeks. This week it was the turn of Blue Group. After looking through our memories book they decided to say something about our magical new digital microscope.

Dancing, skating and stumbling on ice!

On Monday 14th February, Class 4 went on a trip to 'Ice Cube', an outdoor ice-rink at Millenium square in Leeds. After a quick lesson on the basics and the not-so-basics (including skating on one leg and doing jumps!) we were ready for a free skate. The instructor amazed us with his skills.....but it wasn't as easy as it looked....

Well done Class 4! Everyone had a go and seemed to improve their skating skills throughout the course of the morning. Maybe we'll try out some pirouettes next year!!
