The Jewish Heritage Centre
Class 2- 25.06.19
As part of our topic on Judaism, Class 2 visited the Jewish Heritage Centre in Shadwell.
The Heritage Centre is a unique facility which brings Jewish history, values and traditions to life for children to experience and enjoy in a fun and entertaining way.
We started the morning by watching some videos of Jewish children explaining their favourite parts about being Jewish.
Next we split off into small groups to explore the different activities!
We visited the Shtetl which is a traditional Jewish village. We found out that Jewish people worked together for the good of the community doing skills such as cooking and sewing. Hard work was encouraged and laziness was frowned upon.
We learnt about the typical life of a Jewish child and the traditions that they follow, most of these are still practised by Jewish people today.
We talked about Jewish celebrations and even had a go at blowing a special ram's horn known as a hofar which we learnt it is primarily associated with Rosh Hashanah.
It was extremely tricky!
Thank goodness we had Arthur to show us how it's done!
We also visited a “play” kosher supermarket and kosher kitchen.
Here we learnt all about Jewish food traditions. One of the important aspects of observing kosher we learnt about is keeping milk and meat properly separated.
We were set a challenge to shop for a kosher meal and then prepare it in a kosher kitchen.
We had to carefully choose our items for our meal thinking about our combinations of food while also looking out for the kosher sign on the food labels.
It was important that we prepared our food in the correct area of the kitchen.
Finally we had a tour of the onsite synagogue. Here we had the chance to see the real Torah Scrolls and other interesting Jewish items we have been learning about.
We had a fantastic day and learnt a great deal about the Jewish faith.
Well done Class 2!
